Fluid Engineering and ProMinent Supply Cooling Tower Chemical Feed Skids for Water Treatment

Fluid Engineering received an inquiry from a local utility with a need for pumps to feed chemicals for cooling tower water treatment. It requested seven (7) Cooling Tower Chemical Feed Skids. Each skid was too include primary and backup pumps with capability for either pump or both to operate at the same time. The customer wanted complete systems with piping, valves, a pulsation dampener, a pressure relief valve, a back-pressure valve, a strainer, pressure gauges, a calibration column, degassing valves, injection quill, static mixer, and control panels for the following services:

  • Sodium Hypochlorite,
  • Sodium Bromide,
  • Sodium Bisulfite,
  • Algaecide,
  • Silt Dispersant,
  • Sulfuric Acid w/ Containment Basin and Chemical Tote Platform, and an
  • Anti-foam w/ containment Basin, Day Tank and Mixer

The specifications called for checkered plate mounting surfaces to withstand a 110 MPH windload. Fluid Engineering offered an alternative structure with little resistance to wind and minimal surface area for potential chemical pooling.

The skid design requirements for several of the chemicals were to be insulated and heat traced. Fluid Engineering offered the alternatives shown at right and proposed field installation of the insulation and heat tracing, due to possible damage during shipping and installation.

The customer requested variable speed drives in its specification, so the built-in microprocessors on the pumps allow for electronic variable speed control integral to the pump.
