Ventilation Upgrade on Compressor Weather Enclosure

The AQCS (Air Quality Control System) Atomized Air Compressor Building is a sound attenuated weather enclosure for three Elliot Turbine compressors. The air compressors atomize the lime slurry that is sprayed into the flue gas in the scrubber tower to remove sulfur dioxide. The large HP motors supplied with the compressors are ODP with ventilated weather covers. The heat load from the compressor motors and air heads is 460,000 BTUH. The original building ventilation system consisted of a belt-driven non-filtered wall supply fan at one end of the building and fixed blade wall exhaust louvers at the opposite end. Heavy dust loads from the nearby lime handling processes would enter the building through the supply fan and plug the ODP motors causing them to overheat and shut down the compressors. To compound the problem, the belt driven wall supply fan did not provide sufficient cooling for the motors.

A new ducted filtered supply air system was recommended. High velocity grilles are ducted over each roll up door and supply filtered air to each compressor motor. The new aluminum ducts are sized and located to facilitate removal of the motors for servicing through the roll up doors. The existing wall exhaust louvers and wall supply fan rain hood (fan removed) are used for relief. The positive building pressure eliminates dust from entering the building. The high velocity air also provides evaporative cooling for maintenance personnel. The new ventilation system is designed to maintain a maximum 8F rise (calculates to two air changes per minute). The new fan is an Aerovent model 49BIA-SWSI-925RPM-50HP 460V/3/60 Toshiba XS-840 severe mill and chemical duty premium efficient TEFC motor with space heaters rated for 51,000 CFM @ 2.5” SP, 39.8 BHP, 83 dBA @ 5’-0” with mill finish extruded aluminum intake louver, aluminum bird screen, hot dip galvanized V-bank filter cabinet with magnehelic gauge, hot dip galvanized fan inlet transition, hot dip galvanized Arrangement #1 Class II fan, hot dip galvanized unitary base, 304SS shaft, OSHA shaft and bearing guards, 304SS assembly hardware and tags. The filter racks are designed for using JEA’s stock filter (88% arrestance for fine dust) for the compressor intakes. The hot dip galvanized coating is JEA's plant standard for structural steel. The control system is manual on/off with future addition for VFD and room thermostat.
